The obesity epidemic is hitting our pets and it’s up to pet parents to combat it! According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 53% of dogs and 58% of cats in the US are overweight or obese. The study also showed that these numbers have continued to rise, with 90% of pet owners did not recognize that their pets were suffering from weight issues.
Whether we see them for their puppy and kitten care plans, or during their adult dog and cat plans, our staff closely monitors your pet’s weight even as they become seniors. We work hard to ensure that the obesity epidemic we’re seeing doesn’t affect your pet! It also starts with you – monitoring food intake and getting them plenty of exercise.
Cats
Indoor and outdoor cats both need plenty of exercise to combat obesity. Remember, 58% of cats in the US are overweight! Outdoor cats get plenty of play and can run around but indoor cats need a little bit more attention. Invest in a jungle gym or toys on strings that will keep your cats busy and active. Most laser pointers can be purchased for under $10 and can keep your cat busy while you relax at home on the couch! There is nothing more fun than watching your cat sprawl out and chase a red dot around the house.
Dogs
Not all dogs need the same amount of exercise, so it’s best to factor in breed, age, climate, and other factors. Dogs need anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours of exercise per day, depending on energy levels. Plan on doing at least two great walks per day to keep your dogs active, moving, and burning through all of their energy! Unlike cats, dogs are usually excited to go outside and walk around until they cannot go any longer. It’s good for pet parents, too!
